A little care helps artwork hold its color for years. Keep canvas pieces out of direct sunlight, since ultraviolet light slowly fades pigments. Choose a wall away from kitchens, bathrooms and heating vents, where humidity and temperature swings can crack or warp the surface. Dust canvas gently with a soft, dry brush, and never spray cleaner onto it.
Paper art needs extra attention. Use acid-free mats and UV-filtering glass or acrylic so the sheet does not yellow or stain. Leave a small gap between frame and wall so air can move and moisture does not build up behind the piece. To store paper, lay it flat in archival sleeves, and keep canvases upright rather than stacked face to face.
Check your art once a year for loose hanging hardware or signs of mold. When in doubt, ask a professional conservator.
